Kathryn E. Uhlenhopp

Kathryn E. Uhlenhopp, 87, of Sumner, died Thursday, June 2, 2016, at the NewAldaya Lifescapes Retirement Community in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Sumner, Iowa with Rev. Mike Christie officiating.  Interment will follow at Union Mound Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 7th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given in her name to the United Methodist Church in Sumner. 

Kathryn Elaine, daughter of Raymond and Gala Green Holgate, was born August 27, 1928, at Fairfield, Iowa. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1945. On October 3, 1947, she was united in marriage with Harold J. Uhlenhopp at Ames, Iowa. The couple lived in the Parkersburg area until 1958, moved to Cedar Falls until 1961, at which time they moved to the Sumner area. In addition to her duties as a mother, Kathryn assisted her husband with the farm, was the bookkeeper for Uhlenhopp Truck Lines, and retired after thirty plus years as secretary at Durant Elementary School in Sumner.

Kathryn is survived by her children; Theresa Hurley of Waterloo, Elizabeth (Ted) Erickson of Des Moines, Philip (Carol) Uhlenhopp of Sumner, and Ronald (Kathryn) Uhlenhopp of Ceresco, Michigan; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and one on the way; and two sisters, Dorothy Baker of Bradenton, Florida and Alycea Rimedio of Brownsburg, Indiana.

In addition to her husband, Harold, who died October 20, 2000, she was preceded in death by one son, Gerald “Jerry” on January 25, 1976; two grandsons, Brian Hurley on May 24, 1986, and Ian Hurley on November 8, 2012; a son-in-law, Michael Hurley on November 2, 2002; her parents; and four brothers, Raymond, Jr., Richard, Robert, and Harold Holgate.

To Phil, Carol; Ron, Kathryn and families: Am so very sorry to hear and read about your Mom. I remember her well working at the Durant school when we were kids... always a classy lady- and so very NICE. I know you will miss her a lot, but know many, many happy memories will also bring a smile to your faces as you think of her.

Deepest Sympathy to all of the family. Kathryn was the smiling face at Durant Elementary for many years. She was a thoughtful and kind person to all the people she met. She was a role model for many. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul.
